Memories and the atmosphere of a trek I did years ago in the most Tibetan-influenced region of Nepal came flooding back as I looked at the photographs and texts by Giampietro Mattolin and Piero Verni, authors of an unusually fascinating book about countries whose culture is Tibetan. The book is called Lung Ta – Tibetan Universes, and the front cover has an image of prayer flags fluttering in the wind against the background of a chain of mountains in Ladakh, a region which is culturally Tibetan but today is part of Indian territory. Lung Ta – Tibetan Universes is a magnificent collection of stories – illustrated by Mattolin’s poetic images – about travel in all those small “Tibetan countries outside Tibet” which were lucky enough to escape the devastation of the Chinese invasion.
As Piero Verni writes, “the Tibetan universe” which was so hard hit on the Roof of the World lives on across the vast expanse of what is generally known as “ethnic Tibet”, that is in Ladakh, Sikkim, Mustang, Dolpo and Bhutan – the Himalayan universe inhabited by populations of Tibetan origin who, although they have never been directly governed by Lhasa, have always had a civilization completely consonant with Tibet’s in culture, traditions, social composition and religion. The importance of “ethnic Tibet” is evident, because it allows us to make contact with that common cultural and religious idiom which can no longer express itself freely in the Land of Snows.
“Finally”, as Verni says in the book, “there is Tibet in exile, the subculture reconstructed by the over one hundred thousand Tibetan refugees who have settled in India, Nepal and Bhutan and who strive in every way possible to preserve the heart of their culture.”
Verni gives an account of this “subculture in exile” in the last part of the book, where he tells the story of the Dalai Lama’s dramatic escape from occupied Tibet, and describes the new life of Tibetan refugees – a story Verni knows very well, given his long association with the Ocean of Wisdom. The rest of the book takes us through Himalayan regions of “ethnic Tibet” such as Bhutan and Sikkim, and analyses in depth some particularly intriguing aspects of Tibetan civilization like the pilgrimage around Mount Kailash (which is venerated as the “axis of the world” and the abode of gods), or the religious ritual dances (cham) which is performed in Buddhist monasteries throughout the Himalayan area. Whether they describe a landscape or the ritual masks used by the cham dancers, the texts and the photos in this volume always express a truly moving love and knowledge of the subject which one would like to find more often in Italian books about Asia.
Like Ladakh, several of the “Tibetan countries outside Tibet” were once independent territories but have now been absorbed into northern India. This is the case, for example, of Arunachal Pradesh (which literally means “the land where dawn lights up the mountains”), one of the easternmost states of the Indian Union, an impervious and practically isolated region with an average altitude of 3500 metres above sea level. The chapter about Arunachal Pradesh is of particular interest for readers in Italy, where this Indian state is almost unknown – nothing about it has been published in Italian and very few tourists go there. This is a great shame, it must be said, because Verni and Mattolin show how Arunachal Pradesh is interesting not only anthropologically but also culturally and spiritually, since it conserves so much evidence of the Tibetan Buddhist heritage – above all, traces of the life (1685-1706) of the most controversial of all the Dalai Lamas, the 6th, who was born here and is still celebrated in a monastery dedicated to his memory.
The history of this remote predecessor of the current Dalai Lama is recounted by Piero Verni in a wealth of amusing detail. The 6th Dalai Lama presented himself as a great “sinner”, in practice doing the exact opposite of what was expected of him: he kept company with beautiful women, lived a life of pleasure, and wrote love poetry which became very popular among the Tibetan people – until the emperor of China, annoyed by this behaviour, sent his army to capture him, and during the journey to court the young Dalai Lama died. This is the official story. But another version exists, which tells how the 6th Dalai Lama managed to escape and continued to travel under a false identity, imparting teachings in various parts of the East. This (alleged) second part of his life was recounted fifty years later by a Mongolian lama and set down in a book entitled The Secret Biography of the 6th Dalai Lama. Was this “eccentric” Dalai Lama a Tantric mystic or merely a great libertine? And is the story told in his secret biography true or not? The Tibetans are still discussing it. And to learn the truth perhaps they will have to listen to the whispering of the prayer flags flapping in the Himalayan winds.

Le atmosfere e i ricordi di un trekking compiuto anni fa nella regione più tibetana del Nepal mi sono balzati improvvisamente agli occhi guardando le fotografie di Giampietro Mattolin e leggendo i testi di Piero Verni, autori di un libro di raro fascino sui Paesi di cultura tibetana: si intitola Lung ta. Universi tibetani e ha in copertina l’immagine di una bandiera da preghiera che sventola davanti a una catena di montagne in Ladakh, regione di cultura tibetana che oggi è territorio indiano. Lung ta. Universi tibetani è una magnifica raccolta di racconti di viaggi – illustrati dalle poetiche immagini di Mattolin – in tutti quei piccoli “Tibet fuori dal Tibet” che per loro fortuna non sono stati funestati dall’invasione cinese.
Come scrive Piero Verni infatti “l’universo tibetano”, così duramente colpito sul Tetto del Mondo, continua a vivere anche nel vasto spazio di quello che viene generalmente definito “Tibet etnico” (Ladakh, Sikkim, Mustang, Dolpo, Bhutan, ecc.). Vale a dire quell’universo himalayano abitato da popolazioni di origine tibetana che, pur non essendo mai stato governato direttamente da Lhasa, ha sempre espresso una civiltà assolutamente consonante con quella tibetana per quanto riguarda cultura, tradizioni, composizione sociale e religione. E’ palese l’importanza di questo “Tibet etnico” poiché consente di incontrare quella koiné culturale e religiosa che nel Paese delle Nevi non può più esprimersi come vorrebbe.
“Infine”, scrive ancora Verni nel libro, “vi è il Tibet dell’esilio, quella microsocietà ricostruita dagli oltre centomila profughi tibetani che si sono insediati in India, Nepal, Bhutan, e che cercano in ogni modo possibile di preservare il cuore della propria cultura”.
Di questa “microsocietà dell’esilio” Verni dà conto nella parte finale del testo, dove racconta la drammatica fuga del Dalai Lama dal Tibet occupato e la nuova vita dei profughi (una storia che Verni conosce molto bene, avendo a lungo frequentato l’Oceano di Saggezza). Il resto del libro si presenta come una traversata di molte regioni del “Tibet etnico” himalayano (quali il Bhutan e il Sikkim) o come approfondimenti di aspetti di grandissimo fascino della civiltà tibetana, quali il pellegrinaggio intorno al monte Kailash (venerato come “asse del mondo” e dimora di divinità) o le performance di teatro-danza religioso (cham) nei monasteri buddhisti di tutto l’arco himalayano. Ma che si tratti di descrivere un paesaggio oppure le maschere rituali dei danzatori di cham, i testi e le foto del volume esprimono sempre un amore e una conoscenza che davvero emozionano e che si vorrebbe trovare più spesso nei libri italiani sull’Asia.
Come nel caso del Ladakh, diversi fra questi “Tibet fuori dal Tibet” un tempo indipendenti oggi sono territori inglobati nell’India del nord. E’ il caso anche dell’Arunachal Pradesh (letteralmente: “la Terra dove l’alba illumina le montagne”), uno degli Stati più orientali dell’Unione Indiana, quasi isolato e impervio, con un’altitudine media di 3500 metri. Il capitolo dedicato all’Arunachal Pradesh è di particolare interesse per il lettore italiano in quanto in Italia questo Stato indiano è quasi sconosciuto: non è stato pubblicato nulla ed è pochissimo frequentato dal turismo. A torto, va detto. Perché Verni e Mattolin mostrano come l’Arunachal Pradesh sia interessante sia sul piano antropologico sia sul piano spirituale e culturale, perché conserva tante testimonianze del buddhismo tibetano. In primis quelle della vita (1685-1706) del più discusso fra tutti i Dalai Lama: il VI, che qui nacque e qui è tutt’oggi celebrato in un monastero a lui dedicato.
La storia di questo antico predecessore dell’attuale Dalai Lama è raccontata da Piero Verni con dovizia di particolari divertenti; il VI Dalai Lama in pratica si presentò come un gran “peccatore”, facendo tutto l’opposto di ciò che ci si attendeva da lui: si accompagnava a belle donne, conduceva vita da gaudente, componeva poesie d’amore che divennero molto popolari fra la gente del Tibet. Finché l’imperatore della Cina, contrariato, inviò il suo esercito a prelevarlo e il giovane Dalai Lama durante il viaggio morì. Questa è la versione ufficiale. Ma ne esiste un’altra, secondo cui il VI Dalai Lama riuscì a fuggire e continuò a viaggiare, sotto mentite spoglie, impartendo insegnamenti in varie parti dell’Oriente. Questa (presunta) seconda parte della sua vita fu raccontata cinquant’anni dopo da un lama mongolo e raccolta in un libro intitolato La biografia segreta del VI Dalai Lama. Questo Dalai Lama “eccentrico” fu un mistico tantrico oppure solo un gran gaudente? E la sua biografia segreta dice la verità oppure no? I tibetani ne discutono ancora. E forse per sapere la verità dovranno ascoltare i sussurri delle bandiere da preghiera mosse dal vento dell’Himalaya.
